Plumbing Fixture Installation

When you have to install new plumbing fixtures in your home, you might feel stressed or overwhelmed trying to figure out how to install these new fixtures. This is why it’s best to call in a professional because they already have all the needed specialized tools to make sure the fixtures can be installed with ease.

If you decide to install plumbing fixtures as a DIY, you will need to rent some of these tools and also have plenty of patience with yourself and with the plumbing system. However, rather than spending your Saturday afternoons doing plumbing work, why not call in the professionals and spend your weekend relaxing instead?

For those ready to install a new plumbing fixture, here are the top tips from our experts.

The Stages of Plumbing Installation

Whether you do the plumbing installation yourself or call in the professionals to do it for you, there are three main stages of plumbing installation. These stages happen when you are getting new plumbing whether it be in a new home or renovation of your current home.

The three main stages are:
  1. Underground rough in phase
  2. Above ground rough in phase
  3. Finishing phase

Some plumbers might call the finishing phase trim out or trim finish. They all mean the same thing though. Some also say there is a fourth phase if they need maintenance or service for the plumbing system.

The Underground Rough In Phase

When you are getting a new home or a total home renovation, the groundwork for the plumbing has to be done either once the walls are poured for the basement or at the same time as the rest of the rough-in plumbing.

This is the phase when the plumber will take a look at all the places in the home where there are waste and supply connections going from the home to public utilities. This is very important because the plumber needs to see where the systems will enter and leave the building to make sure there are secure and safe connections.

Bathrooms will need to be installed at this point with drains and all the drains that are going into the home will need to be connected to the main service point. The plumber will also take the main line and bring it into the service of your home so that the meter can be placed.

Aboveground Rough In Phase

This part is sometimes combined with the groundwork stage but in many cases, they are separated because the aboveground phase also includes the installation of vent pipes, drains, and water lines.

For homes during this phase, many things will need to be installed including bathtubs, shower bases, and showers. This has to be done for home renovations as well even if you are just remodeling part of the home and not building the home from the ground up.

  • During the above-ground phase many different things will be done by the plumber including:
  • Cutting holes into the walls, floors, and ceilings. This will also include attaching the pipes so they can be connected to fixtures
  •
  • Welding tools will be used to join pipe runs together and chemicals will be applied to the plastic pipes
  •
  • The plumber will also have to operate many different machines during this time including propane torches, power tools, and threading machines
  •
  • All pipes will be installed into the home for all the building’s systems including supply and waste
  •

Gas lines also have to be repaired and installed during this time because it needs to be done before the drywall can be put in.

Most plumbers will also test all the pipes and water supply before the drywall is finished because once the drywall is finished, the walls are closed up, and fixing the plumbing work afterward is very difficult.

The Finishing Phase

All fixtures are not installed in the finishing phase as it’s now the last phase of installing plumbing fixtures. This includes sinks, toilets, and showers. If you have other appliances like a water heater or a dishwasher, they will also need to be installed during this time.

Once all the appliances are installed, the plumber will then check for leaks to ensure the appliances are properly in place and well connected.

Service and Maintenance

As mentioned before, there is also the service and maintenance phase which is done after all the plumbing work is done. Even when a plumbing system is installed perfectly, it still has to be repaired sometimes and maintained well or there will be eventual problems that will cost you a lot of money.

When you need service or maintenance done, plumbers do a variety of different things to ensure your system is in good condition and no installation work needs to be done.

For example, a plumber will begin by checking all the levels and pumps for the proper lubrication. They will then repair all the fixtures that are not in good condition and repair components that are broken or about to break

The operating system will also be verified and the flow and usage rate will be regulated to ensure that your plumbing system is working as efficiently as possible.
